How much damage does a car crash make if both cars are around 40-50 mph?

by admin | August 26, 2008 | In Plane Crashes

I was wondering, there was a really bad accident where I live, the cars were totaled, and I am not sure about the condition of the people, but it made me aware of the danger and much more cautious when I am driving. Another question is, can anybody survive a car crash where a car around 65 mph crashes another car at the same speed. Is there any statistics or dummy crash tests?

i do not know any statistics but i can tell you this that when two cars crash into each other at 50 miles an hour you combine the speeds together so instead it being like each car is doing 50 each car is in theory doing 100

A head-on accident at the speeds you are suggesting (a 80-130MPH impact), will likely end the lives of anyone in the vehicles. Unless of course, there were a miracle and that is what it would take…

I was in a car at 65mph that hit a dirt bank, it was about the same as driving into a wall, the dirt did not move at all. I had no airbags in the car. it hurt really bad because the roof of the car was crushed in, the plastic edge for the sunroof cut my hair against my skull and gave me a concussion, but I did walk away from it.

if you have your seat belt on, you can walk away from a really bad wreck as long as the car does not crush in on you.
just look at what a roll cage and 5 point seat belts that nascar uses will get you, people walk away from 200mph crashes.

good design of the car can mean being fine vs. not making it in a poor designed car.

there are so many things going on in crash, some people die from 25mph crashes, and some live (unharmed) from 100mph crashes.

my advice is to get a car with a stiff frame and good reinforcement (mostly needed in the doors)
    and wear your seatbelt.

if both cars were at 50 on impact, it would be the same as 1 car hitting a concrete wall at 100. u wont survive if not belted in plain and simple. the g forces generated will propel u into the steering wheel with enough force to basically crush ur rib cage.

With airbags, seat-belts, and a well built / designed car. It could be possible to survive most anything. Race-car drives survive 200 MPH crashes.

To calculate the Speed of Impact Add the two speeds together in your case 50 + 40 =90 M.P.H. Hope this helps you

Go to you tube, sign up, go to the videos and search for “extreme crashes”. The videos will answer your question, but I must warn you that some of the accidents are horrific.

At those speeds there would be nothing left of either car except perhaps the engine block and tires. It would take a dump truck and some shovels to pick up what was left — and NO, no one would survive.

TWO CARS TRAVELING AT 65 MILES PER HOUR AND HAVE A HEAD ON COLLISION.

THE IMPACT WOULD BE 130 MPH AND I WOULD SAY THAT THE G-FORCE WOULD BE GREATER THAN AN FIGHTER PILOT, SO IF THE WRECK DIDN’T KILL THEM THEN THE G-FORCE WOULD.
